Bude to Crackington Haven

Started out from Bude sunny and windy (what a surprise). This walk would be 10 miles - a good full day.
After 5 miles on the Coast Path we cut inland - views on the coast are beautiful but get a little boring after a while - I mean, how many sweeping, expansive vistas of crashing blue waves next to rocky cliffs bounded by green pastures full of sheep and cows can I take? Turns out, about 5 miles' worth.
Then, I'm ready for some variety - woodland paths, medieval villages, Saxon churches, hamlets and cottages.
Which is what we got today - even walked through the site of an ancient settlement on the highest spot for miles around. A perfect location for seeing marauders coming from any direction.
Still, many steep ups and downs and my knees were thankful when the day was over.
Bugs of the Day: Crane Flies. Swarmed thick for about 100 yards while we were in the woods. I wore my bandit kerchief. Stupid-looking, but effective.
A taxi picked us up at an inn in Crackington Haven and brought us to our B+B for the night in Boscastle (a town that was almost washed away in a freak flood in 2004.)
We're lolling now on our puffy bed (after a good fish meal at a local pub) surrounded by a hanging forest of our hand washing. Hope it all dries by the morning.
Rain forecast for tomorrow.
About time - hard to believe that we have been in England for a week and we are just now getting a few sprinkles.

Tomorrow, taxi back to Crackington Haven, then Crackington Haven on to Tintagel (where there are ancient castle ruins purported to be Arthurian.)
An 11 mile day.
We are hitting our rhythm.

I will be posting a link to my photo album along side this blog on the right - since I can only upload 4 pics at a time on the blog it is more efficient for me to supply a link to a web album and show all the pics I want to at once.

  1. Love the photos & commentary! Question: aside from the men lawn bowling and a few people by a hotel, where are the people? Are they working? If so, where? It seems you're the only ones around, even in your hotels/BBs.

I can't imagine living such an isolated existence. BTW, a friend & I met a family from England @ CA Adventure on Monday. I mentioned your trip and they knew exactly where/what I was talking about.

Be glad for the cool weather. It's supposed to be in the 90s in So Cal this weekend! Charlene

  2. One more thing: thx. for the photos of the long-haired goats. I recall one of your previous trips had photos of long-haired cows. I mentioned that to Chuck since he never saw one. I'm sharing your blogs w/him, btw. He'll probably be able to appreciate the pivot @ Heathrow! charlene

  3. The pics were actually of long-haired sheep - there are something like 300 different breeds or some crazy number like that here in Cornwall.
The coastal area is pretty isolated - during our days we don't run into too many people on the footpaths. And, at night we're not taking too many pics. I'll try to remedy that - good comment.
