Walked around Barnstaple Thursday (May 7) until time to bus it to Westward Ho! (yes, that's the real name of a town - sprung up fully formed by a Victorian developer because of the ideal resort situation by the sea.)
Many pedestrian-only streets in Barnstaple - very civilized.
Visited St. Anne's Chapel (old, what a surprise), Market Hall (not a food market day; a crafts market day so no interest for us), lunch at a restaurant that originally was a girls' school (clotted cream which is, I'm sure, clotting my arteries), Barnstaple Museum - highlight of the day - skeleton (one of three) found buried in the ocean side cliffs, supposedly died on board a ship and was probably buried by shipmates (found laying w/ arms crossed across chest and fully clothed - so dated by the buttons on the clothes - 1700); kiln info (area famous for pottery); War memorabilia (BoarWars thru WWII); Geology of the area (ho hum - rocks, rocks and more rocks); Evolution cartoons exhibit (Darwin's Bday celebration - cartoons from late 1800's - hilarious); a happy, informative ancient museum docent guy.
Relaxing bus ride to Westward Ho! (yes, the ! is part of the town name).
