Monday, May 11 - Hartland Quay, Morwenstow, Bude

On Saturday, we left Clovelly and headed towards Hartland Quay by way of Hartland Abbey. Took a bus from Clovelly to Hartland, then walked to Hartland Abbey and Gardens. Rode on the top of the double-decker and had great views across the fields in the countryside.
Walked from the town center to the Abbey and were bummed to find that it was closed which was odd as it was Saturday and you would think a main attraction like a giant abbey and walled gardens would be open on the weekend for maximum viewing opportunities and also for maximum money opportunities as there was a pretty hefty entrance fee.
But, no... only open Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.
Tried the garden gate and it was unlocked.
Looked around, saw no one, went in.
Truly a Secret Garden. Beautiful flower beds and an ancient wall surrounding the whole thing with turquoise double doors here and there. Sundials, a gazebo, climbing wisteria in full bloom - everything, actually, in full bloom as it is spring here.
Noticed a person peering in the gate where we entered but figured he/she was another curious tourist so we continued with our photos and garden snooping.
We were quite happy with ourselves for taking the chance and how nice to have this giant walled garden all to ourselves.
Back at the main door/gate - a surprise. Someone had padlocked the gate (so much for fellow tourists peering in before).
We tried each door/gate around the perimeter and finally found a gardener's fence that was unlocked.
Made it out but now the main gate was padlocked, too. A little more snooping and we were out and free.
Weird.
Walked on towards the Coast Path with a stop at the village of Stoke.
